How We Got Here

We have a proud history of developing high quality projects in Barnsley and beyond for four generations.

Brook Cash & Carry in 1947

1947

The Brook family name has been in the wholesale business ever since John Brook and his son Jack founded the company in Barnsley South Yorkshire in 1947. After John's health declined, Jack took the reins and successfully progressed the business and was the enthusiastic founder of the A and O Group. Jack brought his son Martin into the business in 1979 and he became Managing Director of the company. The Cash and Carry was successful for 3 generations until the business was sold by Martin in September 1990 to Fitzwilton Group Plc.

1992

The Groups first venture into the property development sector, with the construction of a 50 bed Care Home called Ladyfield House, near Kiveton Park, Sheffield. We subsequently went on to develop 5 purpose built care home facilities throughout the South Yorkshire Region.

Brook Leisure and Hedonism nightclub in 1993

1993

In 1993, Brook Leisure Ltd was formed by Martin and his son Jason. The former Cooperative department store, known as Island Corner was acquired and following major refurbishment, Club Hedonism was opened in December 1993 and was one of the largest new nightclub facilities to open in the UK that year. The club had considerable success before being sold in 1996 to Northern Leisure Plc, which went on to be known as Luminar Leisure Plc.

Vogue and Pulse nightclubs in Sheffield 1999

1999

A new Brook Leisure was formed and by 1999 Brook Leisure had expanded in the sector and notably had acquired several existing nightclubs from Rank Leisure PLC, including Pulse and Vogue in Sheffield which at the time was the most expensive nightclub facility to be developed in the UK. The club was relocated into the former Odeon Cinema in Sheffield City Centre. Planning permission was obtained for a 100,000 sq ft call center and was sold in a significant property deal to Insight Enterprises in 2001. This was the largest inward investment deal in Sheffield that year and lead to the creation of over 1000 new jobs.

2001

In 2001, as part of a joint venture The Brook Group redeveloped the former Brooklands Motel to create the Brooklands Hotel, a 60,000 sq ft 77 bed 4 star hotel and Living Well leisure facility. The hotel was voted Yorkshire Tourist Board Hotel of the year 2005.

2004

Quest Property were granted planning permission for the flagship regeneration project for Gateway Plaza Barnsley. Brook Leisure under the umbrella of The Brook Group continued its expansion and became the largest independent operator in the UK with 23 Nightclubs. In 2004 Brook Leisure won the converted award of UK Nightclub of the year for Quest Nightclub in Wakefield.

2006

Quest Property Ltd acquires the flagship SA1 Waterfront site from the Welsh Development agency in 2006. The high profile development featured 165 luxury residential apartments. The project was delivered as part of the Welsh Government led regeneration of the Swansa Water front dock.

2010

Quest Property Ltd, originally established by Martin and Jason Brook as Dalemast Ltd in 1991 completed its largest development on the old canister site in Barnsley. The £60m complex mixed used development, Gateway Plaza Barnsley incorporated 188 apartments, a 110 bed Premier Inn hotel, 90,000 sq.ft of offices, 550 space multi storey car park along with retail, leisure and commercial facilities. This development was nominated for ‘development of the decade’ at the 2010 Yorkshire Property Awards.

2016

Originally constructed in 1983 as the headquarters of the National Union of Mineworkers on Holly Street, Sheffield. In 2016 Quest Property, working as a development management partner with the freehold owner National Union of Mineworkers, secured a 250 years lease on the property to facilitate the extensive refurbishment. The 14,500 sqft office element of the scheme was let to Grant Thornton in addition to the 15,000 sqft of ground and first Floor leisure space is now occupied by Pitcher and Piano, Turtle Bay and Mojo. The site had been vacant for the last 25 years and a number of attempts have been made to bring the site to the market either as a new build development or a comprehensive refurbishment, without success until its completion in 2018.

Gateway Plaza Barnsley

2020

10 years on from completion, we have continued to work on developing and enhancing Gateway Plaza. We opened The Pavilion in 2019 and we are now working on a exciting new serviced office development within Gateway Plaza. We now call Gateway Plaza our home, with our head office based on the lower plaza.
